Aftercare
How to look after new work so it heals clean and holds its colour for years.
First 24 Hours
- Keep the wrap on for 2–4 hours, or overnight if your artist used a premium film wrap — follow their specific instructions.
- Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap. Do not use a flannel or sponge.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub the area.
- Apply a very thin layer of unscented aftercare balm or moisturiser. Less is more — a shiny surface means too much.
Days 2 – 14
- Moisturise 2–3 times daily with an unscented lotion or tattoo balm. Keep the skin hydrated but not greasy.
- Do NOT pick, peel, or scratch — even when it itches. Peeling is completely normal and part of healing.
- Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight until fully healed. UV light is the fastest way to fade fresh ink.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo to avoid friction and irritation.
Things to Avoid
- ×Swimming pools, hot tubs, the sea, or baths for at least 2–3 weeks
- ×Picking or scratching the peeling skin
- ×Direct sunlight or sunbeds during healing
- ×Tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo
- ×Heavy gym sessions or excessive sweating for 1–2 weeks
Long-Term Care
- Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to your tattoo whenever it will be exposed to the sun — UV is the number-one cause of fading.
- Keep the skin moisturised even after healing is complete to maintain vibrancy and detail.
- A well-cared-for tattoo holds its colour and crisp lines for many years. Sun protection is the single best investment.
